“People who raise an objection to generalizing about white people may be confusing speaking about people at the group level with stereotyping. Stereotyping occurs when we take a trait demonstrated by one or a few members of a social group and project that trait onto all members of that group. Whether those stereotypes are positive or negative, it is generally understood that stereotypes have hurtful impacts and are unfair. Making statements about well-documented social patterns and outcomes such as ‘Our institutions were set up to advantage white people’ and ‘White identity is shaped by the ubiquitous messages of white superiority that circulate in the culture at large’ is not the same as stereotyping. Systemic racism is well documented throughout society and across history. To say that defensiveness is a common response from white people when Black people try to talk to us about that racism — and that our defensiveness is not conducive to meaningful change — is to state an observation, not to stereotype. One may think that defensiveness is justified, but it is still a predictable pattern that has consequences worthy of exploration.”
“One of the most consistent complaints I have received upon the publication of White Fragility is that I am generalizing about white people. While the email quoted above is obviously a cruder version of this complaint (and I assume not written by a progressive), it is merely a variation on a common theme: ‘How can you claim to know anything about me just because I am white?’ This is the ideology of individualism, which can be conceptualized as a set of ideas, words, symbols, and metaphors — a narrative — that creates, communicates, reproduces, and reinforces the concept that we are all unique and that our group memberships (such as our race, class, or gender) are not important or relevant to our opportunities. Psychologist Wendy Hollway describes narratives as an interrelated ‘system of statements which cohere around common meanings and values… [that] are a product of social factors, of powers and practices, rather than an individual’s set of ideas.’ These narratives are embedded in a matrix of previous statements, stories, and meanings — they connect to, expand, extend, and refer back to narratives already circulating in the culture. If they didn’t connect to existing narratives, we couldn’t make sense of them. Individualism is a deeply imbedded narrative in Western cultures, and it plays a particularly important role in the maintenance of white supremacy. Thus, speaking about white people as a group who have a shared experience specifically as white people is a primary trigger for a white fragility meltdown on a number of levels.”
“I am writing this book at a time when white nationalism — the desire for a white ethnostate by and for whites — is on the rise both in the United States and globally. While aspects of white nationalism have existed for decades, Donald Trump’s entry in the 2016 presidential race marked a resurgence of the movement. Between 2016 and 2018, there was a major increase in mobilization by far-right groups, making it one of the most active periods of on-the-ground, extremist activity in decades. In 2019, the number of white nationalist groups identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) rose for the second straight year — a 55 percent increase since 2017. In the last three years, the SPLC has also documented 125 rallies, marches, and protests nationwide, which were organized and attended by far-right extremists. These gatherings are often a mix of groups that include white nationalists, neo-Nazis, Klansmen, right-wing reactionaries, and members of the ‘alt-right.’ The more radical of these groups want to accelerate a race ware through means of violence.”
“A federal appeals court has revived a lawsuit challenging the COVID-19 vaccine mandate imposed by the Los Angeles school district, noting that the record doesn’t clearly show whether the vaccines prevent transmission of the illness. The Health Freedom Defense Fund and other challengers to the mandate asserted that it violated the due process and equal protection rights of district employees, in part because the vaccines, unlike traditional vaccines, ‘are not effective’ in preventing infection.”
