“South of the Sahara lie several architectural wonders. One of these is Great Zimbabwe, the most immense construction site found in Africa outside of the pyramids of Egypt. Great Zimbabwe is a massive stone complex — perhaps we should call it a stone city — found seventeen miles south of Nyanda, a city in today’s Zimbabwe. It is more than 800 years old but it was only two years ago, when Zimbabwe regained her independence, that any African scholars ventured to the site to study it closely…The ancient plan of this stone city is in two parts. The king’s part, the Royal Enclosure, is on the top of a hill. The other buildings — nine separate stone sites — are down in a valley. Here the king really lived although he spent a lot of his time up on the hill. From that hill he could see the coming and going of traders and warriors along that valley for a distance of about thirty miles.”
